In case of open fire and high heat, it will cause combustion and explosion, and generate highly toxic phosgene. Contact with aluminum 

and its alloys can generate pyrophoric aluminum compounds.

A small amount is used in the production of quaternary amine compounds, pesticides, and as a solvent in the production of isobutyl rubber.
