Melamine is a basic organic chemical intermediate product with a wide range of uses. The most important use is as a raw material for the production of melamine/formaldehyde resin (MF), building formwork melamine glue, impregnated paper, and melamine tableware. Melamine can also be used as flame retardant, water reducer, formaldehyde cleaner, etc. The hardness of this resin is higher than that of urea-formaldehyde resin. It is non-combustible, water-resistant, heat-resistant, aging-resistant, arc-resistant, and chemically resistant. It has good insulation performance, gloss and mechanical strength. It is widely used in wood, plastic, paint, paper, textile, Leather, electrical, pharmaceutical and other industries.

It is mainly used as the main raw material for the manufacture of melamine-formaldehyde resin, as a reagent for organic element analysis, and also used as a tanning agent and filler for leather processing in the synthesis of organic and resin.

Chemical properties

It is nonflammable and stable at room temperature. The aqueous solution is weakly alkaline (pH=8), and can form melamine salt with hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid, etc. In neutral or slightly alkaline conditions, it condenses with formaldehyde to form various methylol melamines, but in slightly acidic conditions (pH=5.5~6.5) it undergoes polycondensation reaction with methylol derivatives to form resins. When it is hydrolyzed by strong acid or strong alkali aqueous solution, the amine group is gradually replaced by hydroxyl group, first to generate ammeline, further hydrolyzed to generate ammeline, and finally to generate cyanuric acid.
