Pentaerythritol is an organic compound with the chemical formula C5H12O4, belonging to the polyol class of organic substances, white crystalline powder, combustible, easily esterified by general organic acids, used in large quantities in the paint industry for the production of alkyd resins, the synthesis of high-level lubricants, plasticisers, surfactants, as well as pharmaceuticals, explosives and so on.

Main applications

Application 1: Pentaerythritol is mainly used in the paint industry to make alkyd resin coatings, which improve the hardness, gloss and durability of paint films. It is also used as a raw material for rosin resin for paints, varnishes and printing inks, as well as for dry oils, anionic paints and aviation lubricants. 

Application 2: It is also used in the production of pharmaceuticals and pesticides. Pentaerythritol contains four equivalent hydroxymethyl groups and has a high degree of symmetry, so it is often used as a raw material for the production of polyfunctional compounds. Its nitration produces pentaerythritol tetranitrate, a potent explosive, and its esterification produces pentaerythritol triacrylate, which is used as a coating. 

Application 3: It can also be used as a flame retardant for adhesives, and with ammonium polyphosphate to obtain an intumescent flame retardant. Also used as a cross-linking agent for polyurethane, providing branched chains within the polyurethane.

Storage method

Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. Store separately from oxidisers, acids etc. and do not mix them. Equipped with the appropriate type and quantity of fire-fighting equipment. The storage area should be equipped with suitable materials to contain spills. 

Pack in plastic bags with polypropylene woven bags or sacks. Pentaerythritol dust can form an explosive mixture with air when the concentration in the air reaches 30g/m3 or more, and can explode when it exceeds 400°C. Therefore, it should be stored in a cool, dry place. Therefore, it should be stored in a cool, dry and ventilated place, protected from moisture and fire.
